Where to catch an outdoor movie this summer

Movies under the Stars may be the perfect way to fit family outings into the hot days of summer. The evenings are a little cooler and more comfortable for everyone, and you won’t have to slather the kids in sunscreen or nag them about keeping their hats on!

Most events are free and on the same day and time each week, make note of the locations though as some community events make the rounds of local parks and venues. You’ll find plenty of family friendly movies, please check the websites for schedules and possible cancellations.

Aurora Movies in the Park

Movies in the Park will be back with three times the enjoyment, spread out over three nights. Thank you to those families that recommended a movie for this series. Arrive early and enjoy participating in special movie-themed crafts and activities starting at 7:30 p.m. Don’t miss the pre-movie trivia up on the big screen. MORE

Celebration Square Movie Nights

From the end of May until the start of September, the whole family can enjoy a film together at Celebration Square Movie Nights. The screenings are each Thursday at 8 pm. Bring your own blankets and snacks! MORE

Whitby Movies in the Park

Bring your lawn chair, blankets and popcorn and watch a movie under the stars on a large, outdoor screen with concert quality sound. New for 2018 – Whitby’s Movies in the Park will all take place at Whitby Civic Park (behind Town Hall). Movies start at dusk, but come early to reserve a spot! MORE

Ajax Movies in the Park

Enjoy a unique, outdoor, family cinema experience projected on a giant inflatable movie screen. Admission is free and movie goers are encouraged to bring a chair, blanket and bug spray! July 20 Coco & August 24 Despicable Me 3. MORE

Moonlight Movies in Richmond Hill

Richmond Hill’s Moonlight Movies series is an outdoor cinema experience during the summer months. It’s free and all you need to bring is a blanket or lawn chair. Movies start when the sun goes down. Pre-movie fun starts at 7 pm. MORE

The Beach Village Movie Nights in the Park

Join The Beach Village for Movie Nights in the Park every Wednesday starting July 5 – August 30! You voted on your favourite movies, now come out and enjoy them with your friends and family! Experience these movies under the stars in our beautiful parks (screenings will rotate between Kew Gardens and Ivan Forrest Gardens Park). Free admission and free popcorn! MORE

Movies on the Common

Movies on the Common is the perfect event to relax and enjoy a safe and fun night under the stars with the whole family. Bring your blankets, lawn chairs, and snacks (Food vendors will be available). Pre-Movie activities begin at 7:30 PM with the show beginning at dusk. Come early and get the best seat in the house! Admission is free. MORE

Newmarket Moonlight Movies

Enjoy an outdoor movie on a huge inflatable screen under the stars. Don’t forget to bring a lawn chair, blanket and snack to enjoy during the movie. Free popcorn will be provided by the Newmarket Scouts. Movie titles and locations will be revealed online closer to the date of the event. All movies will begin at dusk. MORE

Movies Under the Stars at the Blue

Enjoy a box office hit during SUBARU MOVIES UNDER THE STARS every Monday and Thursday at dusk from June 28th to August 30th, pull up a chair in the Events Plaza with your friends and family! Arrive early to explore the Village! MORE

Ports Toronto Sail in Cinema

Canada’s Sugar Beach transforms into Toronto’s largest outdoor movie theatre. Movies are  shown under the open skies on a two-sided screen set atop a barge in Toronto Harbour. Event generally takes place the third weekend of August. MORE

Downsview Park Friday Night Lights

Screening a variety of recent family-friendly flicks at the Park’s outdoor football field & running track. Bring a lawn chair or blanket (and a friend), and be sure to arrive early to enter a raffle for a chance to win a prize pack! MORE

Sorauren Outdoor Movies in the Square

The Outdoor Movie Season returns the fourth Saturday of every month June to September – this season includes catch Babe, Ghostbusters, and Moana. Pizza Dinners before the movies from the new Sorauren Park Pizza Oven, prepared and presented by Pizzeria Defina. MORE

Oakville Summer Series

Downtown Oakville is hosting their annual Summer Series from June 7 to Sept. 2. Movies will be shown in Towne Square on Thursdays, Fridays will feature live music, Yoga will take place on Saturday mornings, family activities will take over on Saturday afternoons, and wellness activities will continue through Sundays. Outdoor Movies in Regent Park

Every Wednesday from July 11 – August 15. Now in its fifth year Under the Stars has grown into Regent Park’s largest summer community event. Showing widely loved films that prominently feature Indigenous, Black and People of Colour on screen. Pre-show before the film each week with family friendly activities. MORE

Forest Park Outdoor Movies

Toronto Outdoor Picture Show invites residents of North York to Parkway Forest Park for a weekly series of outdoor films on Thursday evenings this August, part of the festival’s summer-long Cinematic Cities programme in parks across Toronto. MORE

Burlington Movies under the Stars

Free outdoor movies for you and your family on Thursday nights! All movies start at 9 p.m. Bring your own lawn chairs and/or blanket and arrive early to reserve a spot. MORE

Gravenhurst Cinema under the Stars

‘Cinema Under the Stars’ began in 2012 and has fast become a cherished tradition among attendees. Bring a cozy blanket, lawn chair, friends & family and enjoy free full length feature films with us every Thursday night in July and August! MORE

The following locations show movies that are not always suitable young children, but if you have a teen or even ‘baby in arms’, this could still make the perfect evening outing.

City Cinema at Yonge-Dundas Square

Every Tuesday at Yonge-Dundas Square, catch free films on the giant screen. Movies start at dusk and are preceded by a short film chosen by the National Film Board.

Christie Pitts Outdoor Movie Festival

On Sunday evenings all summer long, Toronto Outdoor Picture Show presents the 8th season of its signature event, Christie Pits Film Festival. The 2018 Cinematic Cities programme showcases great films about cities and the people who make them special, at home and around the world. MORE
