It was a joy of attending opening night of Disney Live Mickey’s Music Festival at the Sony Centre in Toronto!
Since my daughter was very small we have been lucky to attend many different shows but this was our first time attending a live Disney production outside of Disney World. So my five year old daughter, her best friend and mom, and myself ventured downtown for a mother and daughter evening out. The drive down was easy, but getting to the parking garage was a little more work, given all the work being done on Front Street. So after our parking adventure and a wonderful meal we made our way over to The Sony Center to enjoy the show.
The title of this show really sums up the experience. The show was full of familiar songs for the kids (and parents!) to sing along to. They did a wonderful job of keeping the crowd of all ages engaged and dancing in their seats with many of Disney’s most popular characters.
Mickey, Donald, Mini Mouse, and Goofy were the main characters of the show, and all the mini stories would focus around these characters. The show was a compilation of short stories from Aladdin, The Little Mermaid, and The Toy Story. These acts had wonderful props, videos, song, and dance that any child who has seen the shows or movies could sing right along with.
The first act was Aladdin, with Princess Jasmine, and the Magic Genie. The magic Genie had a large impact on me, and guessing all other parents, as his voice was Robin Williams. Aladdin and Princess Jasmine did a wonderful job dancing and singing, and flying on their magic carpet. While the Genie had the sense of humor that made him so popular in the movie.
The Little Mermaid followed with a colorful underwater act with Sebastian and the other mermaids. The first song was Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It), which sorta seemed strange and out of place for this show. But the kids seemed to enjoy it.
After a short intermission Mickey and crew greeted us back with a little hide and seek game with the kids. The children in the audience enjoyed the repeated crowd involvement throughout the show.
In this second portion of the show Ariel arrives onstage. This was the main character that my daughter and friend had been waiting for. I actually got a little chuckle hearing her friend say to her “Ariel is so beautiful!”
The Little Green Men, Woody, Jessie, Buzz Light Year, and Bullseye from A Toy Story were the final story in the show. My daughter was not very familiar with A Toy Story, so I was not sure how much she would enjoy this part. That being said this part of the show involved a ton of audience participation. They had large inflated balls that looked like plants that they had bouncing around the crowd. They had the kids or adults if they chose to, getting up to dance along. It was a very high energy act and the kids all loved it.
The show finale featured all the characters from the production coming out for once last song and dance!
Disney did a great job with keeping the children involved and singing along. My daughter and friend had a wonderful time. The length was perfect at only 1.5 hours, so the little ones did not start to get restless in their seats. This was a wonderful night out and one our little girls will be talking about for a while.
